As of January 1, 2025, Vietnam has implemented a comprehensive ban on e-cigarettes, vapes, and all related devices. The new law prohibits not only the use but also the possession and importation of these products. Travelers caught violating the ban risk severe penalties, including substantial fines and even lengthy prison sentences.
According to the "Reisereporter," those caught importing, trading, or producing e-cigarettes in Vietnam face fines of up to three billion dong (approximately $110,000). In particularly severe cases, offenders may face prison sentences of up to 15 years. Even individuals caught using e-cigarettes will face a fine of around 75 Swiss francs.
While traditional cigarettes remain legal in Vietnam, strict customs regulations limit the number of cigarettes, cigars, and tobacco that can be brought into the country. Travelers should note that they may only bring a maximum of 200 cigarettes, 20 cigars, or 250 grams of tobacco.
Vietnam joins a growing list of popular travel destinations, including Thailand, Singapore, and the Maldives, that have implemented strict bans on e-cigarettes in recent years. Travelers should familiarize themselves with local laws and regulations to avoid potential legal consequences and ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip.
