The Legislative Chamber of Uzbekistan's Oliy Majlis has passed the first reading of a draft law banning the import and circulation of electronic cigarettes (vapes), according to the parliament's press service. The discussion emphasized the importance of the document for protecting the health of Uzbeks, including future generations.
Health Minister Asilbek Khudoyarov noted that compounds used in e-cigarettes harm human health and the environment. Combined with the growth of nicotine dependence, they can lead to brain pathologies and reduced intelligence in youth. The bill prohibits the production, manufacture, storage, transportation, import, and export of electronic nicotine delivery systems, including e-cigarettes and liquids.
The proposed law also introduces administrative and criminal liability for violations related to the illegal circulation of e-cigarettes and other tobacco products. Similar bans are in effect in 37 countries worldwide, according to Khudoyarov.
