Maldives Implements Generational Tobacco Ban, Prohibits Smoking for Those Born After 2007

The Maldives has enacted a "generational tobacco ban," making it illegal for anyone born on or after January 1, 2007, to smoke, buy, or sell tobacco products within the country. The law, which took effect this Saturday, was ratified by President Mohamed Muizzu.

In a statement, the Ministry of Health described the move as a "historic milestone" in the nation's efforts to protect public health and foster a tobacco-free generation. The prohibition applies to "all forms of tobacco," and retailers are now required to verify the age of all customers before making a sale.

The government's statement also reiterated the country's existing comprehensive ban on the import, sale, distribution, possession, and use of all electronic cigarettes and vaping products. This vape ban applies to all individuals, regardless of their age. The new generational tobacco law aligns with World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations for tobacco control and aims to shield young people from the harmful effects of tobacco and nicotine addiction.
